Deer on Lost Creek Parkway again, almost got one by the Village

Third evening this week I've had deer standing on Lost Creek Parkway right around dusk. Tonight one stepped out just past the Village and I had to stand on the brake. Missed it by maybe a car length. Heart's still going a little.

It's only May, too. Wait till the rut gets going this fall and it'll be worse. I drive it a lot coming back from the lake and from my buddy's place where I'm usually tending a smoker till dark, so I'm on these roads right when they're moving.

Two questions for everybody:

1. Where are you seeing the most deer? Lost Creek seems to be a hot spot, and I think the stretch near the Village is worst. Anywhere else around the Bay I should be extra careful?
2. Has anyone hit one after dark, or had it run off hurt after you clipped it? Do you call the Bay police, Game & Fish, or just a tow and the insurance? I'd like to know before I need to know.

What I do now is stay under 30 on the parkway after sundown and watch the shoulders more than the road. If you see one, there's usually a second right behind it. Anything else that works for you?

Yep Lost Creek by the Village is bad, but I'd say the stretch on 330 out my way is just as bad and its got no real shoulder so theres nowhere to go. Dusk is the worst, right when everybody's headed home from supper. I've seen 4 in one yard at once more than one evening this spring.

I clipped one a couple years back, not on the parkway but close. It got up and ran off into the trees so no deer to deal with, just a smashed front corner and a bad attitude. I called the Bay police non emergency number and they said just come file a report, which my insurance wanted anyway. Comprehensive covered it minus the deductable. Take pictures before you move the car if you can do it safely, thats about all I learned.

Your 30 mph thing is right. And yes there's always a second one, I've learned to just sit there a few seconds after the first one crosses.

Also wish somebody would cut the brush back along some of those shoulders, you cant see em till they're in the road.

Good tip on the pictures and the report, Gregory. Insurance always wants that police report anyway, so it's worth filing even when the deer runs off.

On the brush, 330 is a state highway, so I'd guess the highway department handles that one and not the city. I'd still call the city office about Lost Creek and see who they point you to. The more people who call, the better the odds somebody actually comes out with a mower.

Dawn is the other bad time. Once school is back in August the buses are out early, and the deer don't care that it's a school morning. Slow down then too.
